IPL Q&A

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy delivers varying wavelengths of light into the skin’s dermal layers to minimize common signs of aging. The Collagen Bar offers IPL using InMode™’s Lumecca to offer excellent results with just a single treatment.

The expert skin care team at The Collagen Bar may recommend IPL to promote clearer, smoother, and more radiant skin.

How is IPL different from laser therapy?

While IPL and laser devices are both rejuvenating skin treatments, there are key differences. Laser treatments use a single wavelength of light to target specific skin concerns, like wrinkles. Most lasers require more downtime than IPL but also produce more long-lasting results.

IPL uses multiple wavelengths of broadband light to rejuvenate larger treatment areas than lasers. Since the light scatters once it reaches your skin, it doesn’t penetrate as deeply as a laser treatment. Treatments are typically less painful and irritating than laser therapy.

Which skin concerns can IPL address?

IPL treatments primarily target vascular lesions and uneven pigmentation, but they can also provide subtle skin-tightening effects. IPL treatments may be right for you if you have:

  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Spider veins
  • Port-wine stain birthmark
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte discoloration
  • Freckles
  • Brown spots
  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines

Even if you’re satisfied with your skin’s overall appearance, IPL therapy can brighten and enhance your natural glow.

What can I expect from IPL treatments?

IPL treatments can address skin concerns nearly anywhere on the face and body. About one month before your first treatment, you should avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Make sure to apply sunscreen and wear sun protection whenever you’re outside.

While Lumecca® treatments are typically comfortable, your skin care specialist at The Collagen Bar may apply a numbing anesthetic before the procedure. Lumecca delivers flashes of light into your skin, similar to the flash of taking a photograph. During the procedure, you wear goggles to protect your eyes.

Most clients describe the sensation of IPL therapy like a rubber band snapping against the skin. After your procedure, your skin may be red and tender. Your lesions may also darken for one to two days, but these side effects are temporary.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

Though many IPL devices require 4-6 treatments to see noticeable results, Lumecca is a powerful platform that can produce visible results in only 1-2 treatments*. The Collagen Bar team performs a comprehensive facial evaluation before your procedure to determine the appropriate number of treatments for you.
